The use of X-rays in chiropractic care is a debatable topic. Some believe that spinal X-rays should be part of an initial chiropractic evaluation. However, many musculoskeletal issues that present in chiropractic clinics are simple mechanical dysfunctions that cannot be seen on an X-ray and are typically resolved with manual or mobilization treatments. In such cases, starting treatment without X-rays seems reasonable, and imaging should only be considered if symptoms fail to improve.

For more complex conditions, initial X-ray analysis may be required.

Finding the right balance between when X-rays are necessary and when they are not is a key issue in chiropractic care. Unnecessary imaging can harm the patient in various ways, including:

– Exposure to ionizing radiation, which may increase the risk of cancer over time.

– Awareness of spinal degeneration can have a negative psychological impact, potentially labeling the individual with a condition, even when such findings may not affect the clinical outcome. This labeling may lower the patient’s sense of well-being.

There are many arguments both for and against the use of X-rays in chiropractic care, and making the right decision depends on the specific circumstances of each patient.
